Convoy of Hope — Women’s Empowerment Specialist 2019-2021
Task:
I entered this new role with the task of creating an asset map of program activity across about 12 countries currently in operation.
Action:
I engaged with program staff on the ground to create the initial asset map, poured over all of the latest research and evidence-based work related to the program areas I could find, and then charted a course of action from there.
After this, I realized we needed to update the program strategy by about 10 years to the latest research. This would require a lot of internal advocacy in the form of slide decks, 1:1 meetings, always preparing my talking points ahead of time for moments with executive leaders, and more.
Here are the results from my time in this role, without any positional authority and without access to the direct program budget.
Results:
This work helped lay the groundwork for more efficient, evidence-based, locally-driven work.
- Initiated and wrote 400+ pages of original technical training resources to further advance program strategy based on evidence-based sources
- Established asset map of program work across 15 countries to identify growth areas and opportunities to inform larger organizational program priorities. Through internal advocacy, I successfully updated the program model across about 10 countries from staff-led to locally-led to increase budget capacity while increasing local decision-making authority.
- Developed a multinational partnership with another organization to secure locally-based menstrual health training for staff in three countries
- Develop strategic partnership to deliver capacity-building training to staff in-country led by local, in-country market experts. This helped connect them to local networks, delivered more contextual opportunities, and saved on staff travel costs.
- Monthly 1:1 remote capacity-building meetings with staff across 15 countries and created more country-HQ transparency through peer-learning groups and feedback forms.
- Established an inter-organizational working group across 3 countries, which was asked to present a paper on gender equity at a summit in Finland
- Submitted a proposal to fund GenderPRO Certification from George Washington University. Completed certification in 2021 and can now analyze programs using gender analysis.
